Waichi Champion

A native of Hong Kong, Waichi Champion is an artist-educator based in Dallas, Texas. As a guest solo artist, Waichi has performed at Northwestern Percussion Symposium, Manhattan School of Music Virtual Percussion Summit I and II, Southern Methodist University and Eastern New Mexico University. Specializing in marimba repertoire, she has placed at multiple competitions including the Southern California Marimba Competition, the PASIC International Solo Competition and the Great Plains Marimba Competition. Since 2020, Waichi video-premiered Vim for percussion duo and Nothing Follows for marimba solo, both composed by Duncan Patton.

Besides her solo work, Waichi has performed with orchestras and chamber ensembles across the world including the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra and International Chamber Artists. 

As an educator, Waichi joined the East Texas A&M University faculty in 2024. Waichi holds a BM from the Manhattan School of Music and a MM from Northwestern University, both in Percussion Performance. She studied with She-e Wu, Duncan Patton, Christopher Lamb, Erik Charlston, Vadim Karpinos, Shaun Tilburg and Chin-Tung Chau. She is also an alumnus of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and the Music Academy of the West. Waichi is an artist of Majestic Percussion.
